If you want to learn how to measure the vast distance between “tolerance” and “acceptance,” join the Boy Scouts. Today, 61% of 1,400 voting members of the BSA’s National Council voted to “remove the restriction denying membership to youth on the basis of sexual orientation alone.” Before you start writing “thank you” letters though, read on. The official statement, released this afternoon continues, “A change to the current membership policy for adult leaders was not under consideration; thus, the policy for adults remains in place.”

Homophobia is most dangerous when it has a good editor. What makes the BSA’s statement so galling is how it deftly attempts to sidestep the blatant hatred and disdain of gay people packed in between the lines. Instead of sending a clear message that all boys, gay, straight and in-between, should to be embraced as well as introduced to the kinds of role models BSA is in the business of fashioning, the organization’s National Council chose has chosen instead to further the idea that gay adults are pariahs and pedophiles.

And so, Boy Scouts can come out as long as they have no desire, at the age of eighteen, to become role models themselves. That’s just about as logical as Canada’s recent decision to end its anti-gay blood donation ban: gay men can donate blood there now, as long as they haven’t had sex with another man in the last five years. In both cases, the subtext is that gay people, ultimately, are dirty – innately and unforgivably. We will be tolerated but not, at least for now, truly welcome.

So I want to explain you a thing about reboot Jim Kirk. ‘Cause see, I’ve read a lot about how he’s been recharacterized as Zapp Brannigan. And that hurts my soul.

‘Cause I will totally be with you if you want to talk about the sexism in Trek and how Kirk’s interactions are sometimes codified as grossly womanizer-y. (This is a very technical term okay.)

But Jim’s overall characterization doesn’t really… support that sort of behavior? Like yes, he’s more reckless and brash than Kirk and we most definitely SEE him having a lot more sex than we ever did in TOS, but this is the dude who never even THINKS to question that Uhura knew what she was talking about re: the klingon transmission. This is a dude who trusts Bones’s life to Carol Marcus. This is a dude who would give his life for his crew and is beloved by that entire crew (did you SEE their fucking faces in medical - if you could take your eyes of BONES’S fucking face).

Like… they want us to believe he’s this big sleazeball (mind you - i’m not saying that because he’s coded as having a lot of sex.. that’s a completely different issue and one I’m very on board for, just as being a dude who does not respect the women he sleeps with, although respect doesn’t necessarily mean remembering their name, it just involves enthusiastic consent from all parties… though I still refuse to believe he doesn’t remember Christine because he never actually admits to not remembering her, he changes the subject… ANYWAY).

The point is I cannot believe that he’s the sleazeball they seem to think he should be or is or WHATEVER. It just… doesn’t match up to ANY other facet of his character.

So anyway, the point is I get upset when people are like “TOS KIRK WOULDN’T DO THAT THEY’RE RUINING KIRK BLAHBLAHBLAH” when in fact there’s a lot of things that reboot Kirk would do that TOS Kirk wouldn’t and not all of them are necessarily bad. It’s fine to be like “Reboot Kirk’s characterization is inconsistent as a unique entity unto himself” it’s another matter if you want to constantly compare the two Kirks. Of course they’re different. SIIIGH.

I mean, obviously, comparisons happen and are not all invalid. Just. I GUESS I FIND A LOT OF JIM’S PERSONALITY DELIGHTFUL IN REBOOT AND HE’S MY FAVORITE CHARACTER BECAUSE THEY MADE HIM INTO SOMEONE WHO FUCKS UP AND KEEPS TRYING AND IS BEAUTIFUL AND PERFECT AND IMPERFECT AND DAMAGED AND SO FUCKING BRIGHT. THE BOY JUST SHINES. And he finds this family that mean EVERYTHING to him and he’d do ANYTHING for them and he’s just so AMAZING.

So yeah. Basically, I don’t want the fandom to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Isn’t that what we’re supposed to do? Fix the shit they broke in canon? Because it’s okay for Kirk to be a fuck up. He gives fuck ups like me hope. The fact that he hasn’t always been as perfect as TOS!Kirk makes him interesting to me in ways TOS!Kirk never was. Not that I didn’t like him, but he wasn’t my favorite.

Reboot!Jim is definitely my favorite. He’s my forever love.

right, i think a lot of it for me is that jim’s actions in this universe seem very inextricable from the sexism in the AOS as a whole. like - clearly this is an adaptation? so of course he’s different, of course this jim fucks and fights and burns his candle at both ends

but the big thing for me is that it’s hard to tell, sometimes, whether the writers are characterizing him a certain way or if it’s just the bullshit floating around the rest of the universe sneaking in to fuck with his characterization. that’s the major discontinuity in his characterization, in my opinion, and it hurts because i would need so much vodka to soothe that wound. so much.

(and i think a lot of what makes me uncomfortable about the way he’s characterized as treating women is that they seem very much interchangeable; not remembering their names seems, in this universe, like not actually recognizing them as people but rather as interchangeable fucktoys. which - again - runs contrary to his other actions in-universe, particularly with regard to the expertise of the women he works with. i suspect it’s just that this universe is fucking sexist and that blurs the lines of what is characterization and what is shitty writing.)

but tl;dr jim kirk is my forever boy; someone take him away from these fucking juggernauts
